Which sort of people attend speed dating events?
There is no particular type of person but usually those attending are young professional people that might be PAs, marketeers, brokers, bankers, musicians, nurses, doctors, professional rugby players, actors, an inventor, a gallery owner, lawyers, company owners, entrepreneurs, teachers, nannies, surveyors, chauffeurs, a butler, chefs, an archaeologist, business analysts, engineers, lecturers, photographers, property developers, accountants, IT consultants, an illustrator, a personal organiser, psychologists, journalists, tv producers, film producers, cameramen, stewardesses etc. The range of professions is huge and as such you are usually guaranteed to meet a wide range of interesting and very occassionally not so interesting people. That is the real advantage of speed dating. Lots of people in a short space of time.
Do single parents go speed dates?
The answer is yes as speed dating is a safe way to meet lots of new people in those precious few hours away from the kids.
Can I bring a single friend?
Yes the more the merrier and all agencies cater for groups of friends.
What should I wear?
Wear what you would for a first date. Be comfortable with what you choose, be yourself and don't forget that first impressions count!.
How long do they last, how many dates will I have and what amount of time do you spend with each person?
Usually the organised part of the events last anywhere between two-three hours with breaks included. Many events go on after the organised session as people take advantage of the venue. During the organised part you can typically expect to meet between six to twelve "dates" each of which lasts between two-six minutes.
Is it safe?
Yes. Very safe. Anyone interested in you will only have access to your first name and given email address if you both have indicated that you would like to talk more. Giving out any more information is up to you. Also the agency has the credit card details of each participant so everyone can be identified.
Can I contact someone who has not shown an interest in me?
No. And this works both ways so you will not be contacted by anyone who is interested in you but whom you have interest in. Bit harsh this rule if you desperately like someone who has not returned the compliment but it is a rule that serves to protect everyone and the agencies will not show any flexibility on this one.
What happens when I get there?
Upon arriving at the venue, you will be welcomed by your host and handed a match form, a name tag with maybe your first name and a number and a pen. Once everyone is there your host will give you instructions of how the event will proceed as well as answer any questions you may have. Remember you are there to have fun, no matter how nervous you maybe. You will all be asked to take your seats women will remain seated for the night, while the men will be signalled to move
on to there next date after their time is up. After each date you will receive an extra minute to mark on your match form whether you are interested in communicating with that person again. The men then rotate and the next date begins. Typically there are a number of breaks for you to get your brain in gear again as it can be quite intensive.
Why do I need to pay in advance?
Yes is the answer so that the event organisers can ensure the right mix of people in terms of age, sex and interests. No-one is ever let in at the door.
